I prefer the variable speed model. Gives you a lot more control, especially in delicate situations. Here is my review of the variable speed model. I installed French Doors off of the living room, with a landing, and handrails, and trimmed out the new opening. The Fein Multimaster was with me all the way. I started off needing a detail sander, that would get into tight places, that the usual sander with a larger motor, hanging out over the triangular sanding head would not reach. The motor head would get in the way. So a long body sander is what I needed. I went to Home Depot and bought a Ryobi, thinking it would suffice for as often as I needed to do corners. Wrong! No matter what grade of paper I put on it, it dug a hole, made a lot of noise, and refused to sand an even plane. I returned it. In disgust, I popped for the Fein Multimaster Kit. Wow, what a difference. The sanding function was smooth, but not so aggressive as to eat holes in the wood. It starts off with such a light touch, that you can even hold one of their jagged teeth cutting blade attachments against your skin without any harm, but when you apply it against the wood, and exert a little pressure, it slices right through it effortlessly, and evenly. So the more resistance, the greater the cutting or sanding action. The variable speed model is perferred. It is vibration, rather than a stroke, especially at the lower settings. Once you speed up the tool it goes all the way to a mini-stroke. Gives you a lot more control when working up against the edge of something. Truly a masterful tool. You have the option of buying the sanding head with the holes in it, and the vacuum attachment, giving you relatively dust free sanding. Great if you are working in a clean environment, and don't want to blanket the room. The cutting blade that comes with it, that is a half moon shape, does a nice job, but is designed as a freebie to go with the system, and is not as durable as their e-cut blades, which aren't cheap. The e-cut blades also are rectangular so they reach into tighter corners. Makes a perfect job, when removing the wood spacer-shims from the door surround, and cutting fine lines in most any application, where precision is the key. When instaling the trim of the door opening, I had to make a cut at the base, that would meet flush with the tile, for the floor. The flush cutting blade, with its offset design, made me look like Michelangelo. :-) Well OK it is not the Sistine Chapel, but the mating of the wood to the surface of the tile was perfect. No effort, and easy to control. I laid the tile up against the wood, pencil scribed a line, then removed the tile, and cut the wood with the flush bit, just using the pencil line as my guide. Effortless. The fit was so nice, I had to snug the tile in under the line. Bosch makes a flush cutter also, and the advantage to that, is that the blades are available locally. The problem is that the Bosch is not also a sander, and scraper etc. Cost almost the same, and is a one use tool. I noticed that the paper for the Fein has a good backer on it. Saves you from a curling end, which leads to a buggered up backing on the sanding pad. Very exacting, and very well made. You will notice in the Amazon sales rank, that the Fein outsells the Bosch. I love Bosch equipment, so I am not knocking the tool. The optional mini e-cut blades kit is smaller than you would imagine. Combined with the precision vibration of the tool, enables you to work on smaller scale fine work as well. When sanding with the coarser grits, and some pressure, you can remove a good deal of material in short order. By using a finer grit, and a softer push, you can polish the surface to a smooth finish. I have the Fein RT-1800 Router, which is more of an industrial quality piece of equipment, and this Multi-Master will give me many years of reliable service, the same as the router. Fein makes first class stuff. This is one of those tools, that you don't use as often as a cordless drill, but when you need to do something that it does, it's done effortlessly, and beautifully. Strong, yet gentle, durable yet light. It's the perfect mix. Definitely a five star piece of equipment, and worth every penny of it's hefty price tag. Buy it, you won't be sorry.

The Fein multimaster is a great tool for specialty cutting jobs, provided only cutting soft materials and limited use. I have had the same experience as other users. The tool operates much like (and could be substituted for) a Stryker surgical cast saw. However, the steel blades are expensive for their limited life. The carbide and diamond blades are better if used with care. I has enabled a few jobs not possible with other tools, or saved considerable labor for some jobs (as opposed to the usual methods). But don't expect it to be a workhorse because of the limited life and special cut design of the steel blades. Sharpening would require very specialized sharpening equipment which apparently only Fein has at their factory. It is so sad that they do not offer blades make from more durable materials.
Yes the blades are EXPENSIVE, but tool is still OUTSTANDING!

When I bought the MultiMaster 2XL Kit, I wondered how much I would actually use it in my "Handyman" business. Since I "bit the bullet" and spent the money about a year ago I have come to wonder how I lived without this amazing tool for so long.
In the last two days I have used it to: #1 Cut through the grout lines and cement backer-board to allow access to frozen pipes hidden between a tiled shower and a masonry outer wall. It cut cleanly, allowing me to replace the tiles, still on the backerboard and regrout with no tiles damaged for a clean repair. #2 Cut through the back of a tiled-in vanity to access more frozen pipes. The ability to cut straight into and through a variety of materials with a minimum of mess and collateral damage, in places that defy cutting with any other tool, is priceless in my work. #3. Cut through old, multilayered paint on antique baseboard, top, side, mitered corner, and flush at the floor, to allow me to remove it without damage to the baseboard, floor or plaster wall, again to access frozen pipes requiring repair. I was able to replace the baseboard with only a barely visible caulk line and tiny 21 gauge headless brad holes to bear evidence that I had even been there. #4. I sanded right-up to an inside corner on a stair tread to allow blending of old and new wood. You must allow the tool to do the work, rotating the paper to access all 3 edges and changing the paper when it ceases to cut or you will trash the sanding pad, but it is a remarkable sander when used carefully.
ALL the accessories are VASTLY overpriced so buy the 2XL kit and get as many as possible included with the tool. I do not understand why they have to be so expensive. It certainly isn't because they are exceptionally tough. I have taken to using 4" diameter HSS jeweler's saw blades for many cutting jobs when being flush to a surface doesn't matter.
I bill time and material in my business and I do bill my customer when I destroy a blade on a screw or nails. (I killed 2 flush saw blades today so I buy them 3 at a time to lower the cost each a little.)
Despite the cost of accessories I highly recommend this amazingly useful tool. It will allow you to do some jobs faster, easier, and cleaner than you ever could have imagined without it.

The product is unique but the blades wear out very fast and are very expensive. What disappoints me most is that I was lead to believe that I was purchasing the latest model. In fact, it wasn't. Multi-Master advertises its tool with a easy latch to change the attachments --- what Amazon sold me was the earler model. I am very upset that Amazon sold me the product that is trying to be unloaded, instead of the newer version. Please note that I purchased this tool in late February 2007 long after the newer version was on the market. BUYER BEWARE!!

I bought this after trying the Porter Cable detail sander and returning it on their satisfaction guaranteed offer. Enough said. This product comes on a card with little to no instructions. Not that it takes rocket science to figure it out. But for some odd reason putting the head on at certain angles it wants to unscrew itself as soon as I turn the machine on.The sandpaper is cloth backed 55mm x 75mm. It holds up well and stays put with the spring clips. I intend to start replacing it with a 3" belt sander belt that I trim off in 55mm lengths. Then I can get the quality and grits that I want.About the only problem I've had is if the head jumps out of the area, you end up with some nasty pigtails. There are also a limited number of profiles and they don't seem to correspond with common US profiles (e.g., 3/8" cove).Despite my negative comments, it does work fairly well and I'd probably buy it again knowing what I know now.

Expensive, yes. But if you make your living with tools, this one pays for itself in no time. This is one of those tools that most people wonder what the heck will I do with this $400.00 plus tool set. Once you have it, you'll be using it all the time. Yes the e cut blades are outrageously expensive, I've bee making my own by cutting miter box saw blades and push/pull blades and welding them to a 1/16" piece of metal that I bend drill to match the mounting shoulder on the tool. Each blade takes about 10 minutes to make I can make about 15 blades for under $20.00. The flush cut blade works better than the Bosch Fine cut, but the Bosch cuts deeper. The grout removal blade works like a charm and is way better faster than recp saw grout blades. All in all if you are a renovation conttractor that does many different tasks, this is a great investment and you won't be sorry you spent the money.

This is my second Fein Sander. I use them so often that I need to keep one in my van and one in my shop. The blades are very expensive, but if the time saved and better results are taken into account, it saves money. I bill a portion the worn out accessories to the job material and expense. My customers shouldn't mind because I am actually billing them less because of saved labor. It's really great to be able to make an accurate cut through a baseboard without remoing it from the wall, or make plunge cuts into cabinetry. The cutters and scraper are great for working with vynil, carpet, dried out caulk, etc. The variable speed is important, because the sander can generate a lot of heat when sanding paints, fillers and epoxy, if run at full speed.
br /I'm subtracting a star because the manufacturer's on-line ad is misleading, obsolete, and needs updated. They didn't include the mini cut set that was specified in the text and two photos. When I called customer support, I was told that I would need to buy it. It took me a while to make the rep understand that I had already paid for it, and than Fein needed to keep the committment. To his credit, he did eventually come around, and promised to ship the missing parts to me soon.

A great tool for anyone who likes to do most any job that comes along. Yes it is pricy but like other reviews I've read here ,it does cut down on the labor time a whole lot. I have only had it for 1 month but in that time I have been able to refinish 3 large old mahogany windows down to their original beauty and was able to make a few almost impossible cuts to repair a staircase. The tile man left me a mess before I could put in the trim and this tool not only was able to make quick work of removing the excess grout and setting cement and it even allowed me to sand down a few bad edges on the marble tile. So far I gotta say I love it, and look forward to getting a lot more done in a lot less time! Also it is a lot quieter than the porter and cable tool and is quick with tool changes, also being able to put the cutting blades at almost any given angle is indispensable in tight spots.

I received this tool just in time to remove the cabinet flooring under my sink, which was damaged from a water leak over an extended period of time. It cut the area out perfectly and quite fast. Was surprising how well it worked and the lack of heavy vibration made it quite stable in that confined area. The only drawback is the price of blades for it. I'd use it more often if the price of accessories were more reasonable. It does accurate, smooth cuts like nothing else. Pricey, but worth it!

The Fein Multimaster consists of a well made motor and case with an unusually nice length of electrical cord that doesn't requrie an extension to get across short disttances. The high speed oscilating vibrator has numbers attachments and they are all CONSUMABLE and are VERY EXPENSIVE. Like some expensive foreign cares, you might be able to afford to buy it, but can you keep it running. Additionally, dealers (even in Southern California) are extremely rare and Fein states that they have elected not to use Home Depot or Lowes as an avenue of retail distribution. My original intended use was for tile repairs around tub and shower surrounds. The tile kit consists of numberous blades for removing grout. Having used either a cut out tool with a carbide bit or a grinder with a masonry or diamond wheel I was hoping to minimize the amount of dust created removing the grout line and broken tiles. The MultiMaster excelled at minimizing dust, but a $ 30.00 blade only lasted through four 4 1/4" x 4 1/4" tiles. I contacted the Fein office here in the US and they explained to me that the endurance of the blade is dependent of what the backing is. If it is concrete (mortar or hardy board) and the blade comes into contact with the backing then it is shot. This small bit of advice is found nowhere in the instruction that come with the MultiMaster of the $... Tile Kit.My advice: Save your money for a better shop vac and go about it the old way.

I had the same problem as a previous reviewer: The hook and loop sandpaper moved around on the sanding pad. Some sheets were better than others. The problem is the sandpaper, not the tool. I used some hook and loop sanding disks and cut them into shapes to fit the Fein. It worked well. Better yet, I ordered a 75' roll of loop-only sticky Velcro tape and used that to make my own sandpaper. Cut the shapes from regular sandpaper (which is essentially free), apply some velcro sticky tape on the edges, and it sticks better than you need it to. It works great! If you buy Velcro in bulk, it's much cheaper than buying the pre-made sandpaper.
Even better: order the "Fein 63806137017 PSA Sanding Pad (2-Pack)", and use PSA sandpaper. It works perfectly, and PSA sandpaper is very cheap. In fact, you can get it in rolls and cut your own. One advantage of hook and loop is that you can change sandpaper without damaging the sandpaper. While I don't like to be wasteful, I don't think throwing away a half-used triangular piece of sandpaper, worth about 10 cents, is a crime. So I think PSA is the way to go for this tool.
Variable speed vs fixed speed: I bought the fixed speed model for several reasons: I didn't want all of those fancy attachments that come with the VS model, because I didn't want to get hooked on them. They are very expensive. I don't even want to know how great they are. Plus, I am mostly interested in detail sanding. I have flush cut saws and scrapers and other hand tools for other applications. Finally, you can make your fixed speed into a variable speed with a light dimmer. I can hold the dimmer in one hand and the Fein in the other and have great control over what I'm doing. The last remaining advantage of the variable speed model is that it has a longer chord. So I use an extension chord.
Like many reviewers, I was skeptical at first. How could this tool be THAT much better than the 25 dollar versions at local stores? It really is. It's well built and REALLY does the job. It's a very aggresive sander that is easy to handle.
So throw out the poor sandpaper that comes with it (unless it was just in my model -- maybe there was switcheroo at some point since leaving the factory) and enjoy!

The carbide blades wear out very quickly. I like the tool because it does a job that nothing else on the market matches. I wish that FEIN would wake up and offer the carbide blade as a standalone product instead of packaging it with other accessory blades that I do not need. The prices of their blades is ridiculously high. I hope that some aftermarket manufacturer gets the hint and gives these arrogant people some competition. The tool is unique and superb but I wish that they had some competition to bring the prices in line with reality.

As everyone here has noted, the tool is well designed and the various attachments are expensive. I first had the "pleasure" of using this tool to remove grout. I can think of no better tool to do this horrible job faster. Personally, I have so little time outside of work that getting jobs done well quickly is my priority.
br /
br /I also used this tool to scrape mastic (goop used to attach tile to the floor) and cut out rotten wood and plaster in the narrow space between a window and a wall. The way that this tool works made these jobs a breeze. I'm not aware of any other power tool that could have done these as easily.
br /
br /In short, if time is your most precious commodity, then this is a kewl tool that you'll want in your box.

The blades of this product wear out so fast and are very expensive. I owned this thing for couple of years. Useless product since blade wears out as fast as you can replace it. Fein really need to come up with something else to replace their crappy blades. Do not buy this product unless you are willing to spend roughly 30 bucks for anything that you want to cut (that is how much blade will cost).

I've been using the MultiMaster for several months now and am very satisfied with the tool itself. The ergonomics, balance, weight, etc. are very good, and the VS motor is excellent. As others have noted, the accessories are expensive, and some, particulary the abrasives and pads, don't hold up, even under very slight use. Consequently I'd recommend this tool for most of the task for which it is advertised. For sanding however, I typically switch to a tool designed for that purpose.

I purchased this for those odd jobs that come up that you just can't find the right tool for. It didn't come with the blades that I needed and when I found out how much the blades costs I was wishing I hadn't bought this but just made due with other tools. I'll need to spend $140 more for e-cut and flush cut blades to make the tool really usefull but at the same time won't want to dull the blade for fear having to buy more.

We bought this for one of our carpenters for floor patching, mostly. You can do a straight plunge cut with it. One of our other crewmembers liked it so much that he went out and bought one for himself. The only thing about them I don't like is the cost of the blades. The good news, though, is that you can sharpen them yourself if they get a little dull (if you have basic sharpening skills.)

This tool is absolutely fabulous for doing the few things you will need it for, but and this is a BIG but (pun alert!) the replacement blades are VERY expensive--no joke, check the prices. The profile sanding attachment doesn't work worth a darn. Because of the rotary-vibratory motion of tool, the ends of the little piece of sandpaper do all the work and the center does nothing.

I love using tools. They provide a way to get an otherwise impossible job done. I first purchased the Fein MultiMaster tool, as a sander to get into corners, about 20 years ago. Although it made this difficult job better, it took a lot of patience and skill not to get cross-grain scratching. The radial oscillating action took a bit to get used to. Practice on something unimportant!
br /
br /I also, on a whim, bought the saw blade attachment with the unit. In a remodeling project, I needed to cut through paneling right next to a brick chimney, and I thought of the MultiMaster. Wow. It did this job so quickly and safely that I was astonished! I've since used it to undercut (a lot of) trim for flooring, disassemble tile for major plumbing repairs (so that the tile could be reused! Looks perfect.), re-grouting shower stall tile, and a bunch of other things that my other tools just won't do.
br /
br /One example: In woodworking one often installs wooden "plugs" to hide screw holes. I have a "zero-set" handsaw with a flexible blade to perform the task of sawing the plug flush with the surface. The MultiMaster does it better! Just hold a new flush-cut, segmented blade against fine silicon-carbide sandpaper to polish the bottom of the blade and remove any set, then saw away.
br /
br /The MultiMaster didn't replace any other tool. It may help prevent you from using one of the other great tools improperly. For sanding in odd places, I prefer the Porter Cable Detail Sander. However, it is pretty easy to make special sanding tools for the MultiMaster (Aluminum stock from the home center and stick-on sandpaper) so long as you understand what the radial oscillation does.
br /
br /I have purchased most (if not all) of the attachments available for the MultiMaster. They aren't inexpensive, but what they do is amazing. I love using it. Just wish I had discovered how easy it is to make my own unique attachments, including saw blades, 15 years earlier!
br /
br /My MultiMaster is not variable speed, so I cannot comment on that feature, but getting a good accessory package and trying them out is a better teacher of the unique usefulness of this product than I can possibly be.
br /
br /Oh, yes, quality is built into Fein tools. My MultiMaster still works like new! I wish battery-powered drills lasted as long.

This detail sander is beautifully built - German engineering all the way. It is relatively quiet and vibration-free. It probably works fine for cutting, scraping, and degrouting, using the (extremely expensive) blade attachments, but for sanding? Forget it. The hook-and-loop sandpaper absolutely would not stay in place on the pad. In ten seconds it began to rotate out of position, until the pad edges were exposed, whereupon the hooks began to wear off the pad. Despite following to the letter the manual instructions for attaching the paper (place against rigid flat surface, press down firmly, turn on tool) the paper would not stay in place. Using very light pressure against the workpiece would delay the rotation of the paper for a few additional seconds, but I could never get the paper to stay properly oriented for very long. The problem was worse with the coarser grit sandpaper, and slightly better with the fine grit, but present either way. Possibly the PSA option that is available with the variable-speed model of this tool would work better, but the hook-and-loop type paper is useless. Be sure to try out this tool before you commit yourself to the purchase - I ordered from Amazon based on the good reviews, and I will now have to ship mine back, with the attendant hassles and expense.

I bought this tool primarily to use on a wooden boat restoration project. I have been able to use this tool to cut through fasteners that would be very difficult to get at with any other tool. It has performed very well for this application. Using the Metal / wood saw blade attachment; I was able to cut between two joined pieces of wood without destroying the wood. The precision of the tool makes it almost a surgical device. On the other hand I have a couple of complaints about this tool. First is the method used to attach the various attachments to the tool. There are two different sized screw fasteners required to fasten the attachments to the tool using an Allen wrench. After very little use I can already see wear on the Allen head bolt and I now have to be very careful not to strip out the bolt head. It is important to use the correct size screw to match the accessory being used. If the tool isn't attached just right, you can easily damage the accessory. This aspect of the tool should be reengineered to make it more user friendly. Second, the tool accessories are overpriced for what they are. One shouldn't have to pay 20.00-40.00 plus for a cutting attachment. Fein has a right to make a margin but on this they are going overboard. Lastly, I have gone through two sanding disc's with the rubber separating from the metal backing after very little use. Fein has replaced these parts at no cost and said that it may have been a bad batch so I give them an A for customer service. All in all this tool is hard to beat for doing certain tasks.

This tool paid for itself on the first job. Porter Cable's, Ryobi's and Bosch's versions would not have been able to accomplish the task, likely would have been dead before the job was finished and lack the Fein tool's versatility. I was able to reduce what would have been a week of hand sanding of an over-the-post oak stair railing system to one day.
br / Because of the ability of this tool to also do knife thin straight-in cuts, grout removal and so forth, it has become and indispensable part of my tool collection. If it died tomorrow, I'd have it replaced before the day was out.
br / I agree with the complaints about the price of blades, but willingly suffer the cost to save what could be considered a fortune in time. I solve some of the problem of blade cost by saving worn saw blades and using them for caulk and weatherstrip removal, or other projects that don't require a perfect blade. Sometimes I resharpen blades. Even a crude resharpening job works for many tasks. I make my own scrapers by cutting dollar store putty knives in half and punching arbor holes in them. In a pinch, a Harbor Freight saw blade for miniature table saws will cut plastics. Finally, when I burn the edges of the hood-and-loop detail sanding heads, I cut them into specialty shapes and use them for even more detailed work (I bet Fein will, eventually, be selling other versions of their sanding heads).

I've tried various shaped sanders and own a Black and Decker Mouse. Although one of the extra shaped attachments wore through the sandpaper too fast, I would rate this ultra expensive tool as far superior to anything else I have used. Very smooth and worth the money if you can afford it; the Mercedes-Benz among it's peers.

I bought the Fein Multimaster for detail sanding on my boat. It does a terrific job, saving me hours of hand sanding. I use the hook and loop pad, and bought a box of Fein sandpaper, 50 count - for a reasonable price on Amazon. The single speed Start version works well for me; the cord length is ample, and I've had no need to vary the speed. I did have to buy a carrying case, though, to carry the few accessorries - it's about $28 or so. I've also used the saw blade that comes with the Start to cut holes in the back of a kitchen cabinet, and it worked like a champ - It saved me from having to purchase a close quarters drill. For any kind of detail work, whether it's sanding or cutting, you can't beat the Multimaster. It's a joy to use.

This detail sander is worth its weight in gold! I have owned one for about 3 years. The construction is rugged and feels good in your hand. The weight is behind the sanding pad which has its advantages and disadvantages. The main advantage allows for a great deal of pressure control on the pad, which I prefer... the down side, if you try to use this tool for an extended period of time you will feel it in your wrist and forearm. The price may seem a bit on the steep side, but this sander can almost eliminate most hand sanding (all but final finish sanding) in corners; around the base of ballisters; and other 'odd' places. It is a shame this unit is so expensive making it one of those 'add-on' tools to your inventory after you have purchased everything else. If you do a lot of woodworking and cabinetry or custom construction and millwork, get one as soon as possible; you will wonder why you waited so long. This labor-saver is one that will spoil you very, very quickly.
I have both the standard size triangular sanding pad and the narrow 'finger' pad and these have been able to meet all my sanding needs. The standard triangular pad allows you to turn the sanding sheet to a 'fresh' sanding point, very handy. I use the 'hook and loop' sanding sheets and they perform much better than the peel and stick variety. I can not speak to the use of the flush cutting attachment (I have a Bosch 1640VS electric flush cutting saw), and have never had occassion to use the scraper attachment; if I have scraping to do it is usually pulling up tile floors and I use a heat gun and broad putty knife.
Note...This tool can be very aggressive. The first time I used it, I did not 'practice' with it enough and put too much pressure on one of the sanding points. In the blink of an eye wore off the point of the sanding sheet AND the rubber covered point of the sanding pad! So go easy on your first project and get a feel for the way this tool functions on some scrap wood and plywood samples. I didn't ruin the project but I did have to replace the sanding pad. Fein has most of the more common sanding grits available in both sheet profiles.

If you're going to plunk down this much money for this fantastic tool, than you can't really complain about the cost of the replacement blades. This thing is really good and is built well. It's one of those tools that once you have it you'll find uses for it all over the place. I was working on a house built in the 1600's and had to replace some window panes. Someone had used fiberglass to glaze in the broken windows. With out this cutter I don't know how I would have gotten the job done.
Although the attachments are expensive, here's a way to save on sandpaper: buy 6" hook and loop disks. Use the templet and you'll get three out of each disk. At least it something!

I've drill-chisle-saw cut random board patterns replacing old floor heating registers or walls and where cabinets have been removed just prior to refinishing hardwood floors for years, the multimaster paid for itself in one good sized repair job. It seems to be well built, durable, and very....adaptable. It did a great job, and did the work a lot safer! Combined with common sense, and a metal detetector to prolong the blades, (nails), I toothed out probably 70 + square feet of flooring and I am still using the same blade. Multimaster was one tool among others I use, but it really speeds the job up, and reduces physical stress on your body at the end of the day! I recommend it to professional hardwood floor specialsts.

I bought this tool because of my need to remove grout in a tile floor. This tool was awesome. It made the job easy as it vibrated thru the old grout. I ran it an entire day with no issues. The grout blade is still in great shape - after 8 straight hours of use! It was worth the money. Had I removed the grout by had, it wold have taken 10 to 20 times as long.

br /The optional blades for cutting metal, wood and other materials work very well. I plan to use this tool a lot.
2 1/2" Blades Slip

Ok FEIN, when are you going to eliminate blade slippage by upgrading the design of the drive pattern from the current Round to a Star drive? It is my opinion that you are too slow in responding to customer requests to improve the drive design and I reluctantly returned my unit because of frequent slippage. All of you newer blades have the Star drive but the power head still relies on compression, thus friction by the washer and bolt to hold the blade in place. Your current solution is an adapter, which is nothing more than a washer that has sandpaper like surface/carbide particles to increase the friction. Not an acceptable solution for and expensive tool.
br /When you finally get around to improving the design, I will purchase a machine again but I will definitely wait until the new design is released.

Disappointed With the Profile Kit

I own numerous accessories to my Fein Multimaster and the Profile Kit is the only one that I am unhappy with. The sanding paper is difficult to secure properly and frequently comes loose during sanding operations. I have reached a point where I no longer even try to use it because of the difficulty of use and poor performance while using it.

The Profile Kit, for sanding molding details, is an "almost". This attachment has been quite useful on several occasions, although I've found several of the profile shapes nearly useless, while wishing other shapes had been included. The cut-to-size included sandpaper is very high quality-- longlasting abrasive grit, and strong, flexible cloth backing. But (1) it gums up very quickly, (2) only a small portion of each sheet can be used on the attachment, and (3) despite how tough the backing is, it will tear easily if not used very gently. Work-arounds include: cutting your own sheets from less expensive sandpaper (which will tear even faster), and using a stiff brush to unclog the sandpaper (do it often). A better alternative would be a re-design of the attachment so that instead of a sheet that is clamped on two sides, it would take a small roll, so that the user could rotate the paper to use all of it.
What a tool!!

I bought this item from another source because I think this price is a bit much. If you look around there are places to purchase it more reasonably. I haven't used the sander yet but the scraper is excellent. I used it to remove several layers of paint from very old wood and it did the trick with no effort. We orginally bought it to cut jams for laying laminate floors and if you need a flush cut saw this is the one. It will cut through 60 year old California fir with no splitting, chipping, or damage to the wood and no effort on the users part. If you have used a flush cut hand saw laying on the floor you will know how great this is.

I am a tool afficiando. This tool is fine. After an hour of use, it's smooth rotational motor was as cool and comfortable as a cucumber. Your choice should be between the fixed or variable speed models...not accessories. My kitchen cabinets lay upon a 1/4" plywood which we removed for hardwood flooring, flush cutting the plywood to the cabinet base. The included flush cut blade barly stood up to undercuting some cheap door trim, however, a single 3 3/8" oldham blade from home depot for under two fins, was able to go under the 4" toe kick, as well as the rest of the cabinets. Sears craftsman has a 100 tooth, 4" blade for a single fin, which I imagine would fair great for the finish work intended for thier 40-60 dollar blades.

No, the Fein isn't a cheap tool to buy, but unlike others in the crop of high-priced tools, the Multi-Master stands out in that it actually does jobs few, if any other tool can do. Even if you bought it just for it's detail sanding abilities, you haven't even scratched the surface.
I've used it to undercut door jambs when installing flooring--but it's saw attachement is also great for a quick trim of a cut-out that needs enlarging.
For tile work, it's great--can not only remove old grout, but can trim up tiles as well. Need to scrap old mastic off a floor or paint off a surface---the Fein does the job.

I am a finish carpenter of 25 years at Lake Tahoe Calif. & after trying several other detail tools this Fein tool beats them all hands down. If you are looking for smooth action, quality, & durability then look no more. If you just want a detail sander for the garage than the Bosch or Porter Cable might be the ticket but if you want to be using it 5 years from now then the Fein is definitely worth the extra money. Once you learn "when" to use it you will reach for it all the time. Great for flush cutting door trim to allow for new flooring, cutting in electrical boxes, sanding, & who knows what else. Replacement attachments are available right here at Amazon. "GREAT TOOL" Jerry Lowe.

But when I saw the MultiMaster tool, I knew I had a solution. With great confidence and control, I was able to cut out the desired parts of the fiberglass wheel wells with great precision and success. Minimal dust was generated also. My most coveted tool. The Fein simply does things other tools can't. Over and over I find myself needing this tool to do things no other tool in my shop can do. Tool quality is top notch. Even comes with a decent power cord.
br /First you need to know that it works differently, and you will like it. It gives you incredible control and even my wife likes to cut with it. It will hurt you though if you get pinched between the blade and any hard object, or your fingernail.
br /I mostly Fein on wood. Whenever there is just a little more wood than I want to cut by hand, or the access is just too tight, then the Fein is too the rescue.
br /We tried using the Fein for heavy paint removal and found it gives good control but takes patience. After also trying the carbide cutter type paint removal tool we settled on using an airpowerd circular sander and belt sander for heavy jobs. That pretty much sums up all of the Fein functions. Great control and limited speed. So this tool is not for production work because it is too slow. But it will save you tons of time by reaching into corners, fixing details, finishing cuts etc etc etc.
Pricey, but works.

I haven't had a chance to use anything but the sanding attachment and it did what I wanted it to. The major problem I had was that the sanding pads didn't want to stay in place. They tended to move from side to side depending on which side of the pad I was using. The hooks are not as sturdy as they should be and tend to break off which lets the pad move.
